The Senate won’t even begin Donald Trump’s impeachment trial until Joe Biden is president unless all 100 senators concur to a hearing, outbound Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stated in a memo.
But even if the House succeeds in ramming through posts of impeachment in the 10 remaining days of Trump’s term, the Senate is in a pro-forma session in which it carries out no business.
” If the House concurs to posts of impeachment versus President Trump prior to January 19, the Senate can get a message revealing that the Home has impeached the President while the Senate is in recess,” the memo checks out.
In other words, the Senate would not even start its impeachment procedures till Biden was formally made president, making Trump’s removal from office through that route difficult.
Nevertheless, in a Friday afternoon tweet, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders stated that impeachment proceedings ought to still continue.
” Some individuals ask: Why would you impeach and convict a president who has only a few days left in workplace? The answer: Precedent. It must be made clear that no president, now or in the future, can lead an insurrection against the U.S. government,” Sanders composed.
